16.25 A Muslim Discovers What Islam Really Is
The video embedded in this page is an excerpt of an interview with Nuriyah Khan, who was once a religious Muslim woman. She wanted a divorce from her husband and had to escape Saudi Arabia to escape her husband and the police. This excerpt is about how she discovered what Islam really is. Even though she was a devout Muslim she didn't know what the Koran and Hadiths said or that they explained her husband's abusive behavior toward her. When she found out she stopped being a Muslim. Nuriyah says she was a Sunni Muslim. Sunnis make up between 85% and 90% of the world's Muslim population. Shias make up about 10%. They differ on who should be Islamic leaders. In early Islamic history, the "Shiat Ali" or "Party of Ali" claimed that Ali was the rightful successor to the Prophet Muhammad as leader (imam) of the Muslim community following Muhammad's death in 632. Ali was Muhammad's cousin and son in law. The Shias believe that descendents of Ali should be the Islamic leaders whereas the Sunnis believe their religious leaders should be elected. Sunni religious leaders are called Caliphs and Shia religious leaders are called Imams. Iran is mainly Shia and the Saudi Arabia is mainly Sunni as shown in the map below.
There have been many violent conflicts between Shia and Sunnis in addition to religious persecution of Shias by Sunnis. Throughout the history of Islam, the persecution of Shias by their Sunni co-religionists has often been characterized by brutal and genocidal acts; the most recent case of religious persecution by Sunni Muslims involved the genocidal massacre, ethnic cleansing and forced conversion of Shias to Sunni Islam by ISIL in Syria and Iraq (2014–2017).
In the video below Nuriyah talks about the cutting off of hands of thieves that she saw in Saudi Arabia. This is because of a command in the Koran (5:41)
As to the thief Male or female, Cut off his or her hands A punishment by way Of example from God For their crime: And God is Exalted in Power.
Nuriyah mentions that the punishment for apostasy is that your head will be cut off. This is because of a Hadith (book 37 Hadith 94) that says:
Whoever changes his religion, kill him.
Nuriyah looked up what the Koran says about how women should be treated. If you go to the online Quran in English it says: (4:34)
Men are the caretakers of women, as men have been provisioned by Allah over women and tasked with supporting them financially. And righteous women are devoutly obedient and, when alone, protective of what Allah has entrusted them with. And if you sense ill-conduct from your women, advise them ˹first˺, ˹if they persist,˺ do not share their beds, ˹but if they still persist,˺ then discipline them ˹gently˺. But if they change their ways, do not be unjust to them. Surely Allah is Most High, All-Great.
I don't trust English translations because Muslims tend to alter the text so that the Koran looks better to people who aren't Muslims. Fortunately we have Google Translate and the Quran link has the Arabic as well. If you put your cursor over each word in the Arabic it will show the English translation. If we paste the Arabic in Google Translate we see:
Men are in charge of women because God has favored some of them over others and because they spend of their wealth on good deeds. Those who fear their disobedience, admonish them and forsake them in their beds, and beat them; but if they obey you, do not seek a way against them. Indeed, God is above me
Notice the difference. The real translation doesn't say beat them gently it just says beat them. The real translation means that if you fear women are being disobedient to you, beat them.
A Muslim woman who was beaten by her husband Yasmeen Mohammad confirms my observation in the video below.
That was shocking to Nuriyah. Nuriyah also found out in the Hadiths that Muhammad married a 9 year old girl. That led Nuriyah to think that Muhammad was a twisted cult leader from a bygone era. Note that Nuriyah was shocked at what the Islamic text say about how Muslim wives should be treated, if you are unfortunate enough to be a non-Muslim girl captured by Muslims your fate could be a lot worse. Yazidi women and Israeli hostages suffered a terrible fate at the hands of Muslims.
Nuriyah states that most Muslims are better than Islam. In otherwords they are too decent to follow all the literal commands of the Koran. I have also been told by friends that many Muslims are very nice. The ones I know are nice. Unfortunately as Nuriyah pointed out there are a lot of Islamists, which are Muslims who are strict followers of the Koran. They are all over Europe, Asia, Africa and many are in the United States as well. They are violent and many engage in anti-semitic attacks. I just read today (Nov 27, 2024) about an attack in London in which a Muslim threw glass bottles at Jewish girls from a balcony and one of the girls had to go to the hospital after being hit.
