Why Israel Had to Send Troops Into Rafah

Hamas had several battalions of terrorists intact in Rafah, it is holding hostages in Rafah and it smuggled weapons in from Egypt into Rafah.  Egypt must have known about this and cooperated with Hamas.  Egypt signed an agreement with Israel called the Camp David Accords in 1978 which led to a peace treaty between the two countries in 1979.  In exchange Israel returned the Sinai desert to Egypt and the United States started giving a lot of aid to Egypt.   Both as an incentive, then a reward, for the Camp David Accords the United States has provided Egypt with more than $50 billion in military aid and $30 billion in economic assistance. Smuggling weapons from Egypt to Hamas terrorists is a severe violation of those accords.  Egypt must not have wanted anyone to know about these violations.  In fact it threatened Israel that it would suspend the Camp David accords if Israel went into Rafah.  Fortunately Israel did and this video discusses what Israel found.

Smuggling across the Philadelphi corridor is a major reason Hamas was able to keep firing rockets at Israel.  It may have been how Hamas obtained the weapons to attack Israel on October 7 2023.  Israel found that Egypt threatened to suspend the accords that it was already secretly violating.
