5.23 Raising the Minimum Wage
Since 2022, and perhaps before, the California senate has passed bills raising the minimum wage. In April 2024, Governor Newsome signed one of those bills that raised the minimum wage of fast food workers to $20.00. Within days Pizza Hut laid off 1,200 workers Mods Pizza closed 5 of their CA branches, Fosters Freeze shut down and laid off all their employees and Vitality Bowls cut their staff in half and hiked their menu prices by 10%. Menu prices in other restaurants rose as well. In the video below you can see one of the women involved n raising the minimum wage, proudly talking about what she believes was a great accomplishment. You can also see a smiling Governor Newsome denying the consequences of his actions.
Here one victim of the California wage law speaks about it.
