The Birth of the Country of South Africa
The first modern humans are believed to have inhabited South Africa more than 100,000 years ago. South Africa's first known inhabitants are called the Khoisan people who included the Khoekhoen (formerly known as the Hottentots) and the San (formerly known as the Bushmen). The Dutch East India company, a company that made money off of trade with foreign lands, purchased land for a European settlement from the Khoisan people that became known as the Cape colony. This land was located on the South Western coast of Africa. In 1795 the British took over the colony. The original Dutch settlers were called Boers. Boers who didn't like living under the heel of the British travelled inland and northward. They were known as the Voortrekkers which means pioneers. While they moved northward war erupted between the Bantu tribes of the North many of whom migrated southward. The Zulu people lived on the South Eastern coast of South Africa in an area called the KwaZulu Natal.
That is a very nice area from a scenic point of view. Here is a picture.

If only the people there had been as nice as the scenery. In 1816 King Shaka of the Zulus conquered neighboring tribes. Rebels broke off from his control and headed northward and killed over a million Bantu people. By the time they were through almost no one was left living there. This was a big contrast to the peaceful trading of goods for land by the Boers with the Bantus. Piet Retief a Voortrek leader was granted land by the Zulus for helping him get back cows that had been stolen from them by a neighboring tribe. In 1838 the king of the Zulus, Dingane, invited Retief and his men to watch a performance put on by his soldiers. It was a trap and the Zulus killed Retief and his men who had come to watch. Then they killed the people living on the land he had granted Retief including Khoisan people who had travelled alongside the Voortrekkers.
Later on the British went to war with the Boers and in 1910 following the Boer surrender to the British the Union of South Africa was formed.
