1.4  Does Being Black Make You Better Than Whites?

When European ships landed on Africa's Atlantic coast in the 15th century they encountered widespread slavery of blacks to other blacks.   This is discussed in the video below.

Native Americans also had slaves.  In the Pacific Northwest, up to a third of the population was enslaved.

Aztec kings and other important Aztecs would be buried with their slaves.  The belief was that the slaves would be there to serve them in the afterlife.

In the 1700s Muslims from the Barbary states of Africa, captured American ships in the area and enslaved the people on board.  In order to stop this the Americans paid tribute to the Barbary Muslims.  In May 1801 the Pasha demanded more tribute.  Thomas Jefferson realizing that the demands for tribute would keep going up, refused and sent war ships to blockade Tripoli.  The Muslims captured a ship called the Philadelphia which they used against the Americans until, the marines in a daring raid set it on fire.  The Pasha had overthrown and exiled his brother.  Marines offered his brother to get him his throne back in exchange for him giving them troops and in return for a promise to stop the seizure of Americans and the demands for tribute.  Together with the Pasha's brother's troops the marines engaged in a secret mission to take control of the city of Derna and restore him to the throne.  Some of this story is told in the video clip below.

The victory of the United States Marines in Tripoli in their battle to free white Americans enslaved by Africans became part of the song of the Marines.  The words of the first stanza are:

From the Halls of Montezuma
To the shores of Tripoli
We fight our country's battles
In the air, on land, and sea.

You can listen to the marine hymn by watching the video below.

Perhaps the worst oppressor of black people today is other black people.  Black gangs are more violent toward blacks than whites are.  Tony Heller speaks about that in the video below.

There is one quiz for this and the next lesson because after adding information I had to split this lesson in two.
