9.14 Heros and Heroines of Israel: The Entebbe Rescue

You can see the the second part of a condensed version of the Israeli movie about the hijacking of Air France and what happened next below.  The first part was in the previous lesson about the Air France hijacking.  I condensed the movie and split it between two lessons because it's more than 2 hours long.  If you want to see the full length movie click here. The original movie is called Mivtsa Yonatan in Hebrew which means Operation Jonathan in English.

Originally the Israelis did not want to fly into the Entebbe airport probably because they were afraid their planes would be seen and shot down.  Originally they wanted to parachute into lake Victoria and land with rubber rafts onto the edge of the Entebbe airport.  When they practiced in Israel their rafts turned over.  They also were concerned about the large number of crocodiles in lake Victoria.  So they decided to use planes instead.

When the above movie, Mivtsa Yonatan came out it was shown in theaters in the United States and probably in Europe.  The Arabs threatened to blow up those theaters.  I remember because I was a child watching the movie in one of those theaters with my grandfather.

The best way to deal with hostages is to have defenses in place that make it impossible for the enemy to take hostages.  Israel built a high tech wall meant to keep terrorists out of Israel.  On October 7, 2023 Hamas breached that wall, invaded Israel and seized about 200 hostages.  Those hostages are hidden in tunnels under Gaza and in private homes and who knows where else.  The next lesson is about how they breached that wall.  Israel believed that Hamas couldn't do it and that they wouldn't do it but they did it.
