16.6 The Islamic Genocide of
Christians in Nigeria That is Taking Place in 2023
Between 2009 and August 2023, 52,250 Christians have been killed by Boko Haram and Fulani militants in Nigeria. Boko Haram (is also known as the Islamic State in West Africa), who seeks to create a state like the so-called caliphate that took hold in parts of Iraq and Syria between 2014 and 2015. Increasingly, the attackers have included another muslim group, militant nomadic Fulani herdsmen. The Fulani people are the largest nomadic people in the world, and are diffused across much of northern Africa. The Fulani herdsmen, also known as the Fulani militia, are often radical Muslims who target Christians in their relentless attacks on villages across the West African country. They were early adopters of Islam, participating in holy wars, or jihads, in the 16th century. It is estimated that between 12 and 13 million Fulani are nomadic or semi-nomadic herders of cattle, goats, and sheep, who travel across large areas in West Africa to provide grazing land for their livestock. In addition to being motivated by Islam to attack Christians, the Fulani are hostile to farmers because farmers block them from grazing their cattle on their farms.
Violence flared up in the early 2000s, when Fulani herdsman attacked farming communities they accused of stealing their cattle and blocking their routes. At the same time, farmers - who claimed their land was being trespassed and their crops trampled - attacked herdsmen. But Fulani retaliation became increasingly brutal and - according to analysts in the region - led to the destruction of villages. Boko Haram and other Islamic militant groups have armed young Fulani men and encouraged more violence. Fulani shout Allahu Akbar, (the Muslim god is greatest) as they kill Christian farmers and villagers.
Not only do Western countries not act to save the Christians, many in the West won't admit it is an Islamic Jihad against Christians. Instead they blame it on climate change causing herdsmen to fight with farmers for land. They say that land that the Fulani used to graze their cattle on has become desert because of climate change so the Fulani have to graze their cattle on the farms and that causes conflict. One problem with that argument is that the area is greening instead of becoming desert. There is more rainfall today than there used to be. Also higher levels of carbon dioxide may be helping plants grow.
The Biden administration instead of coming to the rescue of the Christians removed Nigeria from a persecution watchlist.
Farmer families and villagers who have been driven from their homes face starvation.
There are groups trying to stop the killing and to help the victims. Save the Children is an organization that provides food for hungry Nigerian children. Some American corporations donate money to Save the Children. People who want to donate money to help Save the Children help children all over the world can do so at their web site.
Another group that is helping Nigerian Christians is OpenDoors. A young woman who escaped Boko Haram speaks about how OpenDoors helped her in the video below.
Another organization that is fighting for the Christians is the American Center for Law and Justice. They fight in the courts. They wrote:
If If we don't act, our brothers and sisters in Christ will continue to be slaughtered. We recently filed again in federal court against the Biden Administration and at the U.N. to protect Nigeria's Christians. We also just met with key Members of Congress. And we are hosting a critical meeting at the U.N. Human Rights Council next month to address this atrocity. It is our sacred duty to act.
There was a coup in Nigeria in July 26, 2023. It is not clear as I write this on August 11, 2023, whether this will help or hurt the victims of Jihad in Nigeria.
