5.75 Will Mamdani's Socialism Make Life Better For New Yorkers?
The price of food is to high in New York City. That is because supermarkets have to pay very high taxes which they pass on the consumer. It is also because of laws that prevent looters from being locked up in jail. Supermarkets pass on the cost they had to pay for the stolen items by raising the costs of the food they are selling. Mamdani said he would bring down the costs of food by using tax payer money to create government run grocery stores. He said that way there wouldn't be greedy grocery store owners raising prices. The problem with that, is that the high prices are not the result of greedy grocery store owners but the result of a greedy corrupt city government that taxes those stores too much and that doesn't lock up looters. Despite this Mamdani won the election to become mayor of New York. A lot of people who voted for him speak in the following video to Donald Martino, a young Venezuelan man who escaped socialist policies like those advocated by Mayor Mamdani.
