4.5 What About the Record Rise in Temperature, Isn't that Proof of Man Made Global Warming?

On a hot day I often hear in the news how we are experiencing record temperatures.  John Kerry who is the U.S. representative for combatting climate change warns about new extremes of climate to justify policies that bankrupt the United States.  Sometimes we need to rely on our own experiences and not what we are told.  I remember when it was a lot hotter.  I am writing this paragraph on June 4, 2023.  June was always a very hot month.  Right now it is 52 degrees Fahrenheit in New York.  This entire spring has been nice and cool which is very rare.  Usually New York goes from cold winters to hot summers with very little spring weather in between.

The record heat arguments are very convincing until you realize that they are wrong.  Here is a video that Tony Heller posted about that.

Three scientists from CERES, the Center for Environmental Research and Earth Sciences have explained that:when data corruption is considered, the alleged “climate crisis” supposedly caused by human activities disappears. Instead, natural climate variability offers a much better explanation for what is being observed.

CERES founder Willie Soon said: “When people ask about global warming or climate change, it is essential to ask, ‘Since when?’ The data shows that it has warmed since the 1970s, but that this followed a period of cooling from the 1940s,” he said. While it is “definitely warmer” now than in the 19th century, Mr. Soon said that temperature proxy data show the 19th century “was exceptionally cold.” “It was the end of a period that’s known as the Little Ice  Age,” he said.

“For the last 35 years, the words of the IPCC have been taken to be gospel,” according to Willie Soon.  “And indeed, climate activism has become the new religion of the 21st century—heretics are not welcome and not allowed to ask questions,” Mr. Soon told The Epoch Times.

Commentator Mark Steyn found out what happens to climate heretics when he said that Michael Mann's data was fraudulent.  Michael Mann came up with the hockey stick graph of global temperature which he claimed to show that temperature was flat like the bottom of a hockey stick but then shot up like it's handle because of climate change.  Michael Mann based his prediction on tree ring data the idea being that when the rings are wider the temperature is warmer.  The problem was a lot of the tree ring data showed the rings getting thinner.  To make his hockey graph he discarded that data and inserted other temperature data.

Michael Mann sued Mark Steyn for defamation and won a million dollars.  Michael Mann's attorney told the jury that it was important to punish climate deniers.

On July 7 2023 Reuters reported that:

The world recorded its hottest day ever on Thursday, breaking previous highs set on Monday and Tuesday as global average temperatures continue to climb, according to data from the U.S. National Centers on Environmental Prediction."  Steve Milloy wrote an article in the Wall Street Journal titled "Hottest Days ever?  Don't Believe It."  He wrote:

The global-warming industry has declared that July 3 and 4 were the two hottest days on Earth on record.  The reported average global temperature on those says was 62.6 degrees Fahrenheit, supposedly the hottest in 125,000 years.  The claimed temperature was derived from the University of Maine's Climate Reanalyzer, which relies on a mix of satellite temperature data and computer model guesstimation to calculate estimate of temperature.

One obvious problem wit the updated narrative is that there are no satellite data from 125,000 years ago....A more likely alternative to the 62.6 degree estimate is something around 57.5 degrees.  The latter is an average of actual surface temperature measurements taken around the world and processed on a minute-by-minute  basis by a website called temperature. Global.  The numbers have been steady this year, with no spike in July.

As the IPCC has become radicalized and taken over by leftists its report about climate has changed.  In the graphs below you can see what the IPCC reported in 1990 and if you scroll to the right you can see what it reported eleven years later.

The old report shows that it was hotter in the medieval warm period than it is now.

Policy decisions about stopping oil pipelines and spending enormous amounts of money on wind turbines and solar farms come from reports on rising temperatures.  An important source of these reports is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA for short).  According to them, July of 2021 was the hottest July in recorded history.  Can we trust them?

Paul Homewood got hold of data from climate reporting stations in the finger lakes region of New York and compared the recorded temperatures from 1943 with 2014 and 2018.  NOAA reported that the temperatures in 2014 and 2018 were higher than 1943.  The data from the reporting stations showed that on the contrary 1943 was hotter.  A NOAA employee explained that they are simply correcting for differences in measurements over time.  So their argument is that at different times temperature has been measured in different ways and that has to be taken into account when comparing past temperatures with current ones.  One statement made was the temperature in July 2021 was the warmest on record.  Tony Heller in the video below gives a lot of evidence that July 2021 was not the hottest on record.  I remember July 2021 and it wasn't that hot in New York.  My grandmother remembers 1936.  She says it was so hot that you could fry eggs on the sidewalk (I'm not sure if she said sidewalk or street).

One of the problems that global warming alarmists (people who scare us with predictions that the world will become super hot)  faced is that temperature records showed that in the 12 years from 1998 to 2013 the earths temperature was not going up even though according to their climate models the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere should have mad the temperature go up a lot.  This is called the Global Warming Hiatus

In 2013 the report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change wrote that  for the last fifteen years the temperature had not gone up.  This was contrary to the alarmist predictions of doomsday climate change that so many have made.  The report was leaked to the press.  Leaked documents seen by the Associated Press also showed deep concerns among politicians about the lack of global warming.

Germany called for the references to the slowdown in warming to be deleted, saying looking at a time span of just 10 or 15 years was ‘misleading’ and they should focus on decades or centuries. The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has changed its tune after issuing stern warnings about climate change for years/  Hungary worried the report would provide ammunition for deniers of man-made climate change. Belgium objected to using 1998 as a starting year for statistics, as it was exceptionally warm and makes the graph look flat - and suggested using 1999 or 2000 instead to give a more upward-pointing curve.

The United States delegation even weighed in, urging the authors of the report to explain away the lack of warming using the ‘leading hypothesis’ among scientists that the lower warming is down to more heat being absorbed by the ocean – which they say has got hotter.

If the world is heating up why would only the oceans heat up and not the land, that makes no sense. Worrying that the truth could be used by those who disagree with you to make their case as politicians from Hungary did, does not justify suppressing the truth.  The suggestion of politicians form Belgium that the IPCC select a later starting date to hide data is a standard trick of climate alarmists to fool people.

Real scientists change their theories to fit the data, politicians change the data to fit their agenda.

NOAA did a study called the Karl Study which concluded that there really was no global warming hiatus.  They made it appear that temperature was increasing by raising the temperature measurements from buoys floating in the ocean to match measurements made at the engine intakes of marine boats and then graphing them.  Changing the data to correct for this kind of thing is called data homogenization.  There is no reason to assume that temperature measurements made by marine boats are more accurate, one would expect engines to be hot and to cause the measured temperatures to be higher than they should be.

NOAA has temperature measuring stations all across the United States.  As American towns get build up stations that used to be next to grass become surrounded by concrete.  What does that do to the temperature measurements?  A good way to answer that question is to think about the last time you went to an outdoor swimming pool where there was both grass and concrete.  If you walked barefoot you would have noticed that the concrete was very hot.  If you then walked on the grass you would notice that the grass was a lot cooler.  As concrete gets closer and closer to measuring stations the measured temperature will increase with or without global warming.  Anthony Watts visited NOAA temperature measuring stations throughout the United States and found that 96% of them were no good for reasons like the one above.  You can view a video about this here.

The people at NOAA are not dumb.  So why are they doing this?  Why pretend the world is in danger of climate disaster if it isn't.  If climatologists predict disaster they become important.  What they say can influence what the government does.  If they say that everything will be OK then people forget about them.  When real temperatures are different than those predicted by climate alarmists then people don't trust climate alarmists which is one reason that climate alarmists have an urge to change the data.  The government gives grants (money) to climatologists, if the government thinks the climatologists are wrong they might not give them grants.  The government may want to hear that carbon dioxide is causing disaster because then they can tax companies for producing carbon dioxide and get more tax money.  Doing so may drive companies out of business and the end result can be less taxes but left wing governments don't think that way.  So a left wing government may prefer to fund those climatologists who predict global warming disaster.  People who want to redistribute the wealth from wealthier countries to poor countries may see global warming alarmism as a way to get that to happen since they can say that the wealthy countries that produce a lot of carbon dioxide are heating up the poorer countries and so owe poorer countries compensation.

One way to check if what the climate alarmists say is true say is to get hold of data from climate reporting stations the way Paul Homewood did.  Another is to look up old newspaper reports about the weather.  That's what Tony Heller did.  He talks about what he found in the video below.

Mike Hulme, a Professor at the University of Cambridge and founding Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research has said that saying that the earth faces a climate emergency is a lie.  Many other prominent scientists agree.

Although one can't trust reports about temperature history it is possible that some global warming is occurring.  It is possible that man made carbon dioxide is contributing to it.  What is clear is that there is huge amount of exaggeration and climate alarmism when it comes to global warming.  What is also clear is that the steps being taken to stop global warming are not stopping global warming and are creating the real monster of inflation and poverty which is something to be really alarmed about.
